Atelier [ah-tel-YEH] from French ateliér: a workshop or studio used by an artist, artisan or designer.
ATELIER NEWPORT’s summer show, Vestiges, will open August 5th, and run through September 8th, at the gallery, located at 200 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, alongside the historic International Tennis Hall of Fame. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, August 5th, from 2:00pm-4:00pm.
Vestiges, a group exhibition, attempts to explore the trace or tiny often-physical indication of something lost or vanished. Eight artists, working in different mediums, study the vestige left behind with an emphasis on staining, mark making, and the use of negative space, or residue. The empyrean, ethereal remains hint at early transcendental work in an attempt to transcend the spirit. Featured artists include Rose Umerlik, Kate Wilson, Mary Dondero, J.T. Gibson, Julia Mandle, Amanda Fenlon, Peter Elsworth and KA Davis.
In the words of Agnes Martin, The main thing in making art often is letting go of your expectation and your idea.
ATELIER NEWPORT has created a sanctuary and oasis for an eclectic mix of emerging and mid-career artists, each of whom has a deep connection to Newport.
